Sheepdog Tip of the Day, Before Combat tip 54
Only a bat can precisely triangulate the location of an attacker based on sound. To accurately zero in on an attacker in low-light conditions, it is best to aim at the muzzle flash. To teach this, Peterson brought his students into a darkened room and fired multiple rounds of paint bullet ammunition to show what the flash looked like. (Gunpowder propelled, paint bullet ammunition emits a muzzle flash, making it particularly effective for this kind of training.) Once the students were mentally "cocked and primed" to look for this stimulus, the next time they walked into the darkened room and were shot with a paint bullet, they zeroed in on the muzzle flash with accurate shots. From that point on, they performed in night combat situations with a much higher degree of proficiency.
