Sheepdog Tip of the Day, During Combat tip 61

[Prev] [Next]

Charles Remsberg in his excellent book, The Tactical Edge, trains warriors to develop "positive self-talk," the most important of which is, "I will survive and keep going, no matter what." Often, wounded police officers report that this was all they heard in their minds after they were shot, and it was essential to their survival. These are the kind of intrusive thoughts that we must program into our minds if we are to survive in combat.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, On Combat

The most effective technique for self-talk is that it is in present tense and positive. So, instead of "I will survive . . ." make it "I survive . . ." - Detective David M. Schiff Police Peer Counselor
